URBAN CORPS SAN DIEGO COUNTY

Urban Corps of San Diego County joined Live Well San Diego as a recognized partner on June 17, 2014. Urban Corps is a locally-based nonprofit conservation corps and charter school that gives young adults ages 18-25 a second chance at a high school diploma, paid job training, life skills, and support services. Since 1989, the organization has provided underserved, low-income youth with the opportunity to improve themselves while improving the San Diego region.
Urban Corps supports the well-being of its students (known as Corpsmembers) in a variety of ways.  Urban Corps Charter School provides a comprehensive life skills workshop curriculum including classes on health and wellness, tobacco cessation, conflict resolution, stress management, and self-esteem.

Corpsmembers receive training in First Aid, CPR and OSHA 10 to promote a safe working and learning environment.  Corpsmembers also participate in a variety of environmental service projects throughout the year, the vast majority of which include outdoor work promoting physical activity and supporting the goals of the surrounding community. Youth help maintain Urban Corps’ onsite rooftop garden, which provides a hands-on space for students and community members to learn about water conservation, healthy eating, and the benefits of growing their own food in an urban environment.

To set Corpsmembers up for long-term success, dedicated education staff members help youth approaching graduation with resumes, job and college applications, interview practice, and job placement services.  Youth also receive assistance in multiple stages of the college admission process, from college tours to applications, registration, and course selection.
