The American Red Cross joined Live Well San Diego as a recognized partner on October 11, 2017. The American Red Cross is known across the country and across the world to be a leader in disaster preparedness and response. American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties helps our local residents stay safe, prepared and resilient.
The American Red Cross San Diego/Imperial Counties provides several programs to prepare residents for emergencies: free smoke alarm installations in high-risk communities; CPR/First Aid training to educate citizens to be more prepared and ready to help those in need; pre-deployment briefings for military members and their families; nutrition counseling and breastfeeding education for mothers; and much more.
The American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties provides many opportunities for residents to be involved in helping their community through volunteer experiences, such as blood drives, assisting military, and volunteering with youth to help San Diego thrive.
During the 2017 hurricane season, the Red Cross, along with community and government partners, provided more than 1.3 million overnight stays in emergency shelters in eight states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Red Cross has served more than 6.7 million meals and snacks, and provided more than 4.6 million relief items to people in need.
Locally in fiscal year 2017, the American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties has provided disaster services to 1,225 individuals and 444 families, installed 4,682 free smoke alarms, services to 41,084 military members and spouses, raised awareness about disaster relief efforts, were supported by volunteers who spent a total of 95,312 hours aiding the Red Cross mission, served a total of 103,208 women, infants, and children in nutrition counseling and support, and much more. For more than 40 years, the local Red Cross has administered the Women, Infants & Children (WIC) program in San Diego County. WIC is a supplemental nutrition assistance program that provides families in the most vulnerable communities with access to nutrition education, breastfeeding support, community resources and healthy food.
