Cajon Valley Union School District (CVUSD) became a Live Well San
Diego partner on June 24, 2014. Serving over 16,000 students,
CVUSD was awarded the 2014 Innovation in Education Award for
transforming learning through production rather than consumption.
They continue their efforts to enhance and enrich the supportive role
of nutrition in the classroom through the CVUSD’s Child Nutrition
Services Department, which serves over 12,000 lunches daily and is
implementing a Farm to School program using locally grown produce. To
advocate nutritious meal decisions, they participate in the Summer
Feeding Program and the Childhood Obesity Initiative Farm to School
Taskforce, which includes conducting a district-wide student health
survey and coordinating yoga classes with the City of El Cajon
Recreation Department.
In 2013, CVUSD was the recipient
of a three-year Refugee School Impact Grant from the California
Department of Social Services to increase attendance and decrease
discipline and referrals. CVUSD also holds the distinction of having
had three Safe Routes to School infrastructure updates to improve
pedestrian safety at three school sites to promote walkable, active
lifestyles for their students.
As a Live Well San
Diego partner, CVUSD will continue making inroads in promoting
student health, community engagement, and fostering positive
relationships among the District staff, families and community.
