CITY OF DEL MAR

The City of Del Mar joined Live Well San Diego as a recognized partner on May 2, 2016. Through several policies and city-wide efforts, the City of Del Mar shows a commitment to Live Well San Diego’s vision of supporting a healthy, safe and thriving community.

Believing in the value and importance of civic engagement, the City of Del Mar encourages residents to discuss ideas and contribute to plans for the community’s future through their online platform, “Engage Del Mar,” ensuring resident input in policy, systems and environmental changes.  Additionally, to encourage community involvement and healthy habits, the City of Del Mar adopted a Civility Code called "Civility Works:  The Del Mar Code of Civility."   This code outlines ways that residents will communicate with each other, particularly at public meetings, decreasing ill-will and misunderstanding through productive dialogue.

The City of Del Mar is committed to providing healthy environments, therefore, it is a smoke-free and vape-free city that has banned smoking in all public spaces, including all outdoor arenas, stadiums, amphitheaters and the fairgrounds. Further, the City of Del Mar is committed to developing and maintaining a green and sustainable future for all those who live, work and play there. In support of these efforts, the City is developing a Climate Action Plan setting targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and recently approved a ban on single-use plastic bags throughout the city. Additionally, in collaboration with San Diego State University, SANDAG, and the County of San Diego’s Health and Human Services Agency, the City participated in an automated bicycle and pedestrian data collection program aimed at increasing active transportation opportunities in the area. Their support for safe and walkable communities placed them 9th out of 18 cities in Circulate San Diego’s 2015 Regional Walk Scorecard.

The City of Del Mar promotes healthy behaviors for all residents and City employees by ensuring access to nutritious foods, recreational opportunities and supportive environments. The City permits and supports a farmer’s market every Saturday at their City Hall location, promoting access to fresh fruits and vegetables and supporting local farmers. Additionally, the City of Del Mar adopted comprehensive lactation accommodation policies for City employees and was the runner up for the San Diego County Breastfeeding Coalition’s Breastfeeding Friendly Workplace award in 2015.

The City of Del Mar is committed to maintaining and expanding efforts in alignment with the Live Well San Diego vision of a healthy, safe and thriving Del Mar.
