Promote Diabetes Prevention

The third action step is to promote diabetes prevention to your employees. Review the information and resources below or download the San Diego Diabetes Prevention Employer Toolkit by clicking on the button below.

Action Step 3:

Promote Diabetes Prevention to Your Employees

Did you know that 80% of people with prediabetes don’t know they have it? Type 2 diabetes is one of four chronic diseases that contribute to over 50% of deaths in San Diego. Talk to your employees about the benefits of preventing diabetes, encourage them to take the prediabetes risk test, and provide resources.

Talk to Employees About Why it Matters

Employees need to be made aware of the benefits of reversing the risk of diabetes. For example, the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) lifestyle change program can positively affect employees in a number of ways, including:

  • Fewer sick days resulting from improved health of employees and their families.
  • Learning new self-management and coping skills.
  • Developing a social support system to help sustain new health and wellness skills.
  • Increased well-being, self-image, and self-esteem.
  • Improved coping skills with stress or other factors affecting health.
  • Increased job satisfaction.
  • A safer and more supportive work environment.
  • An opportunity to incorporate healthy behaviors into their daily routine.

Ask Employees to Take the Prediabetes Risk Test

Encourage employees to take the prediabetes risk test to find out if they are at risk. Learn more information about steps that employees can take to prevent diabetes.
